The Importance of Why We Need Descents

We have to realize, though, that just because the path is downhill, it doesn’t mean we’re being led to our downfall. The downhill trail is essential to more exciting and rewarding adventures in the future.

One of our sons has always been interested in radio. When he was a little fellow, his Christmas present was a very elementary radio construction set.

As he grew, and as we could afford it, and as he could earn it, he received more sophisticated equipment.

There have been many times over the years, some very recently, when I have sat with him as he talked with someone in a distant part of the world.

I could hear static and interference and catch a word or two, or sometimes several voices at once.

Yet he can understand, for he has trained himself to tune out the interference.

It is difficult to separate from the confusion of life that quiet voice of inspiration. Unless you attune yourself, you will miss it.

Answers to prayers come in a quiet way. The scriptures describe that voice of inspiration as a still, small voice.

If you really try, you can learn to respond to that voice.

There are so many of us who go through life and seldom, if ever, hear that voice of inspiration, because โ€œthe natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discernedโ€ (1 Cor. 2:14).

I have come to know that inspiration comes more as a feeling than as a sound.

The Lord has a way of pouring pure intelligence into our minds to prompt us, to guide us, to teach us, to warn us. You can know the things you need to know instantly! Learn to receive inspiration. โ€” Boyd K. Packer

I hope that not too many of our prayers are silent, even though when we cannot pray vocally, it is good to offer a silent prayer in our hearts and in our minds.

Never hesitate to gather your family around you for your prayers, especially in those times when more than morning and evening family prayer is needed. Extra needs require extra prayers.

Your little ones will learn how to talk to their Father in Heaven by listening to you as parents. They will soon see how heartfelt and honest your prayers are. If your prayers are a hurried and thoughtless ritual, they will see this too.

Difficult as it seems, I have found when praying, other than in private and secret, that it is better to be concerned with communicating tenderly and honestly with God, rather than worrying over what the listeners may be thinking.

The echoing of โ€œamenโ€ by the listeners is evidence of their accord and approval. Of course, the setting of prayers needs to be taken into account. This is one reason why public prayers, or even family prayers, cannot be the whole of our praying.

Some things are best prayed over only in private, where time and confidentiality are not considerations. If in these special moments of prayer we hold back from the Lord, it may mean that some blessings may be withheld from us.

After all, we pray as petitioners before an all-wise Heavenly Father, so why should we ever think to hold back feelings or thoughts which bear upon our needs and our blessings? We hope that our people will have very bounteous prayers. โ€”Spencer W. Kimball

Adulting doesnโ€™t happen at a certain age. Every personโ€™s adulting journey is different. We all have different experiences, cultural and religious backgrounds, upbringing, privileges, limitations, and everything else that makes our journey unique. Adulting can happen at any age or at any stage of someoneโ€™s life. Although social norms would say otherwise, your adulting timeline is your own. So cherish life as it goes and enjoy the journey.

I looked up the word virtue on Google and it showed me this meaning: Behavior showing high moral standards. Last year I was faced to choose between the normal human reaction and to take the high road.

One of the people we dealt with in business is of a different ethnic background. When we sold to him our business, we did so in good faith placing everything transparently in front of him.

When we were on the negotiation stage, he couldn't wait to buy the business. He told us not to entertain other buyers because he will be paying for it the next day.

After six months, we received a text from him that he wanted his money back because we deceived him and have hid information from him about the business.

He made threats and it brought us sleepless nights. I told my husband that we should already file a police blotter because I was scared and I was angered.

However, my husband always shows virtue in things that would seem uncertain and scary. He chose to set a time to talk to this person to clear things out.

If someone threatens you gravely, I think the natural thing to do is to go and tell the authorities so that they would put that someone in jail. At least thatโ€™s what was on my mind; but not my husband.

We met with this man and I was shaking when he started talking. I wanted to rebut and tell him he was wrong but my husband listened and took the time to understand this man who was already raising his voice.

When the man gave us time to talk, my husband explained to him how the contract that they made works and what its implications are. Eventually he calmed down and when I looked into his eyes,

I saw fear and I felt pity for him. When the matter settled, we came into an agreement that we would help him in whatever challenges he is facing.

I am grateful for my husbandโ€™s virtue. He sees people as the Lord sees them and with that he is able to find time to understand them. I see the Savior in the virtue that my husband holds dear.

The moral code that he bears has held us through the difficult times in our lives. In his efforts to act with integrity, he was able to take the high road and showed that his morals are higher than the natural tendencies of man. - JC

When I was still studying, my mom had often reminded me of my ID. Sometimes she would remind me about it the night before I would retire to bed, or when I had worn my full school uniform in the morning or when Iโ€™m at the gate and about to leave.

More often than not, I got annoyed as she did this almost every day. But as I looked back those days, really, my ID was one of my most forgotten things to bring when I go to school.

When Jesus asked Peter โ€œLovest thou me more than these?โ€, he said, โ€œYea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee.โ€ Of which, Jesus replied: Feed my lambs. (John 21: 15-17)

Such question with seemingly simple answer was asked repeatedly.
At the third time when Peter was asked the same question, he grieved.

Like Peter, we sometimes feel annoyed or uncomfortable when we are reminded to do the simple things we ought to do especially when it's overly repetitive.

But really, when we try to evaluate ourselves, it's those basic and simple things that we tend to forget.

We all need to be reminded.

To be nourished by the good word of God.

To be warned and to warn.
