In more ways than one, beliefs of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints can sometimes be peculiar. For one, they believe mightily in Jesus Christ, but other people often wonder why there are no crosses or statues of the Savior in a typical Latter-day Saint chapel. And during this Holy Week, a time revered by members of the Christian world, another question inevitably crosses some minds — how do latter-day saints celebrate Holy Week?

Although members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints do not join in popular Holy Week celebrations such as receiving the mark of the cross on Ash Wednesday, joining in a procession, or visiting stations of the cross, they also view the Holy Week as an opportunity to study, reflect upon, and ponder the Savior’s Atonement. Here are some of the ways members of Christ’s church celebrate the Easter Season.

We Celebrate Holy Week By Remembering The Savior’s Atonement

We view the Holy Week as a great time to learn more about the Savior’s Atonement. Latter-day saint families gather together to read accounts of Christ’s life recorded in the scriptures. In addition to learning about the Savior through the scriptures, most members also turn to Bible videos published by the Church’s official YouTube channel, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Latter-day saints take this special time to gain an even greater appreciation for the Savior’s sacrifice for mankind.

Gathering To Listen To Messages About The Savior

Twice a year, members all over the world gather together to listen to messages from the Prophet, apostles, and other church leaders, an event known as General Conference. One of these worship meetings is usually scheduled during the Easter season, sometimes even on Easter Sunday. Often, the messages during the April conference focus on the Savior and His great atoning sacrifice. Talks by Church leaders, help members view the Atonement in a different light — an experience that helps Latter-day saints gain a renewed understanding of the Savior’s role.

Joining In The Easter Campaign Of The Church

Every year, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — through ChurchofJesusChrist.org — launches an Easter campaign that helps members and non-members alike celebrate Holy Week by focusing on Christ in our daily lives. The campaign often includes videos, passages from the scriptures and action ideas that help members learn more about the Savior’s life by giving service to other people.

This week, your Latter-day saint friends on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram may start to share Easter-related videos and photos. Take time to watch their tender feelings about Easter; and we can all join together to celebrate the life, ministry, and saving sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints celebrate Holy Week in different ways — sometimes even different than other religious sects. But like other faiths, members of the Lord’s church view the Easter season as a special time — a time to know the Savior better, and a time to better understand and appreciate the depths and reach of Christ’s and Heavenly Father’s love for mankind.
